OUR MISSION

The Foster Girl Network's mission is to provide mentorship and resources to support current and former foster girls.

We are here to increase their confidence, self-worth and earning power so that they successfully transition out of the system and build vibrant adult lives. That begins by supporting their personal and professional development.

THE FACTS

On any given day, nearly 400,000 children are in foster care in the United States

Only 25% will return to their biological parents or other family members, 75% will stay in foster care for many years.

75

24,000 17-18 year olds will be forced out of the system (aged out of the system) with no financial or family support.

For foster children who never find a permanent home and simply age out of the foster care system, the consequences are significant and long-term, they often do not get the help they need with high school completion, employment, accessing health care, continued educational opportunities, housing and transitional living arrangements.

Studies of youth who have left foster care have shown they are more likely than those in the general population to not finish high school, be unemployed, and be dependent on public assistance. Many find themselves in prison, homeless, or parents at an early age.

Over 70,000 children in foster care live with almost 56,000 foster families across the UK each day.

This is nearly three-quarters of the 97,000 children in care away from home on any one day in the UK. Every year thousands of new foster families are needed.

As a former foster child in the custody of CPS living in a children’s shelter, shuffled through the court system with a Social Worker & Probation Officer, living in group homes and “aged out” of the system at 18 years old I can tell you, it has not been an easy journey.”

Ever wonder why all the missing kids are not on the news. That's because most of them are orphans, ParentLESS children, runaways, living on the street, with NO families...

FOSTER CARE + HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Read the stats:

  • 800,000 runaway children will be lured into commercial exploitation each year.
  • 50% of children sold into trafficking in California are foster care children.
  • At least 85% of all CSEC in New York (commercially sexually exploited children) had a child welfare background and 75% of those residing in #NewYork City had spent time in foster care.
  • 98% of children who are identified as survivors of sex trafficking had previous involvement with child welfare services, and many were legally in the care and custody of the state while they were being prostituted by traffickers.
  • As many as 300,000-400,000 children are commercially exploited in the United States each year.
  • The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates that 1.2 million children are trafficked each year. The United States is ranked as one of the worst countries in the world for human trafficking. Children raised in foster care have a greater chance of becoming victims. In 2013, 60% of child victims the FBI recovered were from foster care.

“If we care about child trafficking, we must care about foster children.”

We have a choice, we can continue to ignore foster children, or deal with the ramifications of our actions when they age out of the foster care system. Minorities, gay, trans-gender, refugees, immigrants, and women are all groups of people our society rallies behind, yet foster children continue to go unnoticed. Millions of people do not understand why it’s crucial we support #ParentLESSChildren, or better yet, a child who has been labeled flawed by society.

It's time for society to STOP treating foster children like they are invisible. They deserve to perfect their potential. If you'd like to see a decrease in homelessness, incarceration and welfare recipients in our society, transforming foster care is a powerful solution.

1 Child + 1 Hour a Month

We know there are people who want to help but they don’t know where to start. The Foster Care Network is making it possible for people all over the world to donate their time to support foster girls and contribute to causes and programs that provide education, housing, food, clothing, healthcare, transportation, employment and resources to foster girls.

THE MOVEMENT

The network welcomes adults who are interested in mentoring foster girls, non-profits that support foster girls and adults who successfully aged out of the system.

We are currently accepting mentors who wish to join our network.
